Mon, 12/09/2016 (All day)
Location:
Derry
Small boy running towards the Peace Bridge

We will be travelling on the train from to Derry (it's a nice journey under the cliffs at Mussenden and along by the sea) at a time agreed between attendees - some may be coming from Belfast, others joining the trip at Coleraine.  We will walk along over the Peace Bridge and to see the walls, stopping off for lunch and then visit St. Columb's Cathedral where there is an audio-visual presentation etc.We can complete the self-guided circum-navigation of the walls, stop for and ice-cream and spend the rest of the time in St. Columb's park. It's a very manageable walk and the schedule is flexible to accomodate all staminas and lengths of leg.

Anyone who wants to join us is very welcome, we'll keep the organisation loose and let people move at their own pace, organising to meet at different points as it suits us.

Radio Relay

Location:
Old Museum, Belfast

**RADIO RELAY**

WORKSHOP CONFIRMATION!!

The Golden Thread has kindly given HEDNI a workshop on Monday 6th June.  1-3pm at the Old Museum.

Ages 10 to 14 - booking essential

**Welcome to Radio Relay an audio extravaganza inspired by radio.  Marconi transmitted some of his first radio signals between Rathlin Island and Ballycastle in 1898.  In 1916, Irish rebels seized a wireless telegraphy station to make the world’s first pirate radio broadcast.  A few months later cutting edge radio technology allowed instant communication between commanders on the front line at the Battle of the Somme. Golden Thread Gallery have invited artists to create artworks that use radio to receive dispatches from the past and send messages to the future.  This is your opportunity to work with some of our artists and to get involved!

Golden Thread Gallery is offering schools a FREE opportunity to make their own foxhole radios with artists Gareth Moore and Deirdre Mc Kenna. A limited number of sessions will be available from 3rd May until 10th June 2016! On 18th June, Radio Relay will hit the airwaves and participants will be able to tune in and connect with all the Radio Projects.  They will also be invited to participate in a range of Radio Relay events in sites in and around Belfast.

Objectives

Radio Relay will give young people an opportunity to make a modern version of a first world war foxhole radio. The foxhole type radio was primitive in its construction, made from readily available materials and powered only by the very radio waves it received. This would be similar to what was used by Marconi in his early radio experiments.

At W5 last year in Not Back To School Week

Every year we make a special effort to have an exciting week near the start of September - it allows us to welcome those starting their first year of home education, to reconnect after the summer, to kick start our year...

Everyone should feel free to organise their own events - and if they clash with others, or spill into other weeks, then don't worry too much - the more options and excitement we have then the better NBTSW'16 will be!
